Healthy Habits To Teach Your Child

Wednesday, July 27th, 2022

We often hear people say, “old habits die hard!” But what exactly is a habit and how do we inculcate or get rid of it? To put it simply, a habit is a regular practice that is hard to give up. Quoting, famous kids author, Sean Covey, “we become what we repeatedly do”. 40% of everything we do on a regular basis is out of habit! There is no prescribed time to teach your kids habits, learning is a progressive process that starts as early as a year and a few months. Good habits can be taught via books, educational videos and toys. Children learn best in a multi-coloured environment, outside of conventional learning methods. Therefore, it is important that parents inculcate learning in their day-to-day life. Healthy Habits That You Must Teach Your Kids Parents must be mindful of talking and behaving in a certain way so as to not impact their little ones wrongly.  Kids learn better by observing, so in order to teach them good habits, you must first practice it yourself. Setting yourself as a role model for your kids will help them in keeping away from unhealthy choices and from developing lifelong bad habits.

5 Healthy Habits That Will Bring Lifelong Benefits Limiting Screen Time – Children are exposed to digital media 24/7, be it computers, televisions or smartphones. They have access to some sort of device at all hours of the day. It is impossible to completely ban screen time, however, regulating it will do the needful. Award them with short TV breaks, for instance, half an hour after completing homework or so. Adopt different ways of entertaining them, such as indoor/outdoor games, painting, etc. Reading Books – It is never too early or too late to start reading books to your toddler. Reading not only boosts their imagination but also improves their vocabulary. Sit with their favourite book and help them in finding their safe haven. Eating Breakfast – The first meal of the day is given very little importance, teaching them the healthy order of taking meals, heavy breakfast, mild lunch and a light dinner. Give them the necessary nutrients for the day in the form of eggs, fruits, milk, and cheese. Physical Activities – Introduce your child to a range of activities such as swimming, hiking, playing a sport, etc. This will not only keep them fit and active but also help them keep physical ailments at bay later in life. Bond while doing your favourite activity together and make happy memories.

Practice Positivity – Preach self-love and self-acceptance. Remember to never discourage your child. Teach them daily affirmations and always motivate them to chase their dreams. As a cute blue Hippo Tang once said, “When life gets you down, you know what you gotta do? Just keep swimming.” – Dory, Finding Nemo. Lastly, it is important to note that forcing your kids towards disciplined living will only push them farther away from it. The best approach is to teach them the benefits and drawbacks of both and allow them to choose their path. Always keep a close watch while maintaining a safe distance in order to give them the liberty of making their own decisions.
